One of the best old games I got into again in the laat years are Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. Strategic role playing games where you manage a squad with the D&d rules. The games have been also restyled and are sold on steam for the ones interested. Here is a nice piece of the soundtracks which are super good IMO (modern games are quite bad, only a few are good).

Great catch!  I remember having discussions with BG players regarding small unit tactics.  Some good graphics for the times and seemed to be pretty engaging for those playing it.  Glad that I never played it as I am sure that I would have become hooked.

Classics. I remember playing them the first time around. Icewind Dale and Planetscape Torment too.

"run Boo Boo run" "go for the eyes"

Anyone who played should remember the reference.

Diablo 1 and 2 were equally classics.

I am a fan of this game series. They released a version on Steam as well. Diablo 1 and 2 are also excellent games.

When was the last time you heard someone asking what the relevant "THAC0" was?

I spent a lot of time on these games before I found World of Warcraft years ago...

Another great PC game was Jagged Alliance 2, if you liked Baulders Gate but would like to try a turn based strategy mercenary game give it a shot, it was fun. You can get it on Steam.

I will look that Jagged Alliance 2 up. Baldur's Gate is among my favorite on the pc. Would be nice to try something new that is quality.

I heard another company took over the rights to the game and came out with an enhanced version. It looks interesting and unlike in Baldur's Gate the original version, a ranger can actually do the things a ranger is supposed to be able to do. I logged many hours playing Baldur's Gate. It's a long game, though.

How can you still play this? I have the discs still but they don't work.

The game is available on Steam, a gaming download hub with online community, and something called GoG, at https://www.gog.com, but I am not familiar with the site.

BG did escape me so far, like Icewind Dale and Planetscape Torment did. (Wasn´t there a cynical and acidic, floating skull in Torment taunting and ridiculing the player-character all of the way as a sort of sadistic sidekick?) Seems to be a good idea to maybe have a look at BG in the winter, tho.

Oh, boy, I spent a lot of time with Jagged Alliance 2, which honestly, aside from being fun, has its limitations and in my opinion has been surpassed in depth and mechanics by the turn based tactic/strategy of X-Com Enemy Unknown to which there are very good DLCs and mods available. But I get the point, Jagged Alliance 2 is quite a good game mechanic wise and does profit a lot from its mercenary atmosphere. After all those years I still find it to be remarkable, how the developers were able to give to the mercenaries (the illusion of) individual and distinct character with very little, yet quite effectful measures, that could be realized at the time and with their comparatively little budget. Even though you can tweak and modify the outer appearance of a X-Com soldier in lots of ways and until kingdom comes, at least to me, they always came across a good bit more generic or `soulless´, if you will. Like marionettes or sockpuppets in comparison, maybe even because they are subject to your changing them around as much as you could like.

Jagged Alliance 2 by far is not as convoluted as the X-Com franchise, a fact which on the upside leads to a "more tight or faster flowing" gaming experience (but be prepared to reload a lot, because your guys very easily can get wiped out and may at the time not be replaceable - same as in X-Com).

Hey JoeTech, Great to see you on site again!

Matcha, great post and description ... might just be enough to tempt me into picking up a game over the summer ... maybe.   The main appeal for those PC games I played in the past was the specific detail each game brought to the playing environment. Those things I considered trivial at the time were minimized for those things I considered most appealing.

Some of the commentaries the NPC's make are hilarious. I like when Jaheira says, "You're amusing...in a what the hell is wrong with you kind of way".

I discovered that if I use the Avast browser instead of Firefox, I get the recaptcha box May was talking about. Now, I can actually log in.
