We are taking a break from the normal course this week. Brother Beachbum specifically asked for some harp music...WELL! Vox Populi Vox Dei! As they said in Rome. So this for you buddy!

Normally I detest the BBC, but this documentary on the Harp, history, construction, music; is actually pretty good---OK and Catrin Finch is super fine! Definitely a 10. BUT THAT IS NOT why I selected this documentary....really...sort of. Anyway its pretty good.

Now that the history end of the harp has been explored and images of Miss Finch are firmly implanted in our collective subconscious we can move on to some music. Below is 1 hour of selected baroque music...most of which was not actually composed for harp but it does transcribe really well. Enjoy!

Here is the program: (And yes the works are out of order; the opening work is the Handel Passacaglia).

  1. Pietro Domenico Paradisi: Toccata (from Sonata No. 6 in A flat major)
  2. Georg Friedrich Handel: Passacaglia from Suite No. 7 HWV 432
  3. François Couperin: Sarabanda in E flat major from 4ème Concert Royal
  4. Johann Sebastian Bach: Tempo di Borea from Partita No. 1 for Violin BWV 1002
  5. Johann Sebastian Bach: Sinfonia from Cantata BWV 156 (Ich steh’ mit einem Fuss im Grabe)
  6. Georg Friedrich Handel: Sarabanda from Suite No. 4 HWV 437
  7. Johann Pachelbel: Canon in D major P 37
  8. Tomaso Albinoni: Adagio from Organ Concerto in G minor
  9. Bach: Prelude No. 1 in C Major BWV 846 from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I
  10. Antonio Vivaldi: Largo from Concerto No. 4 in F minor RV 297 “Winter”
  11. Bach: Adagio on a theme by Alessandro Marcello from Concerto in D minor BWV 974
  12. Arcangelo Corelli: Adagio from Op. 6 No. 4
  13. Arcangelo Corelli: Adagio from Sonata 5 Op. 5
  14. Henry Purcell: Hornpipe in E minor ZT 685
  15. Henry Purcell: Hornpipe in B flat major ZT 570
  16. Jean-Baptiste Krumpholtz: Romance from Sonata Op. 12 No. 1
  17. Sophia Giustina Corri: Rondo from Sonata Op. 2 No. 3

OK if you waste your time looking for music expressly written for Harp you will doubtless find a web page boasting the 10 best works of all time---forget it, most of that stuff is modern garbage BUTT (as Popp would say) There are a couple of works by Handel specifically for harp---yes I know the second one is the Passacaglia again but it is a better performance than above...and no, the woman isn't as hot as Miss Finch but then WHO IS? I've FOUND my unicorn!

Thanks for posting this Pete!!

I just now saw this because I was focused/ listening to Honda on Zoom. the Harp and organ music is great. Glad you posted the “good” Harp music, not the sappy stuff that makes people run for the hills!

I know what you mean Beach, the stuff Catrin is playing at the end of the BBC video is complete crap, but she is still hot--even playing crap.

I admit that I find most harp music far too syrupy for my liking. However, I make an exception for heavy metal duets skillfully played on harps. Apparently these women arranged the music as well as performed it.

The inner pain and lament of Metallica's "The Unforgiven"  comes through in this performance, in my opinion.

While not metal, I like this cover of "Paint It Black"

And for Evil Genius, here is Pachebe's Canon D, which, surprisingly, sounds less syrupy than more conventional arrangements. (It still brought tears to my eyes the first time I listened to this version, I admit it. )

Why do I feel like I stumbled upon the unicorn thread, from The Evil Genius Unicorn Catrin Finch playing the harp. To Big Siamese Cat Twin Unicorns playing on the harps.

I briefly listened to all of it, and I did enjoy the bit I heard. I noticed when listening to the harps, I didn’t feel like going on a violent murderous rampage, it actually made me feel quite peaceful.  I like all kinds of music and get to enjoy everyone’s unique tastes when I listen to stuff like this that I have never scene or heard before. 😇

#Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. (Revelation 3:3)

HA HA Redpillbible! TOO funny man! Catrin Finch is a hottie but even she could never dislodge me from my MGTOW Monk-dom. Obviously the Harp isn't my favorite instrument but it is kind of nice in small dosage...and this was a favor to BeachBum. I always try and honor requests, and present something new that guys might never have been exposed to before--even if you hate it you are better for the experience.

In a sense it is the Unicorn thread. The harp is said to be a very hard instrument to master. Even a easier to play instrument requires thousands of hours of practice to attain competence in, let alone mastery. Putting in that amount of effort consistently requires tremendous self discipline and persistence which pretty much puts any woman who does this into Unicorn territory. Whether on a harp, a violin, a pipe organ, or even a Hurdy Gurdy.

You beat me to it! Was briefly thinking about this, while listening to the pieces from the OP: What is it with these Gals playing hard, classical instruments?

With that sorted out: I can fully recommend listening to the pieces presented while refitting your kitchen on a spring day!

This almost by itself will turn into a meditation. Like an instant meditation: just add some cleaning agent to the formula and you are good to go!

AND with this being a fabulous unicorn thread, anyway, let me just tell ya from the horse´s mouth: I now use this pretty cheap glass cleaning towel, which even can work wonders on the white laquered surfaces! Aw, such a charm, saves me so much time for the little details in the small corners!

This much approved of thread and its harp music surely will accompany the expansion of my refitting operation throughout the whole of this appartment.

Thank you T.E.G. (and Beachbum) for this extraordinary edition of the FNO-series. After all, she ain´t so hot in my eyes, but who cares?

The harp is among my favorite instruments. The Cannon in D was good, but I did not care for the girls other pieces. When I think of the harp, I always think of Harpo.
