Alan Watts (1.6.1915-11.16.1973)

Nature of God and Death

"...the negativity of the feminine principle is obviously life-giving and very important, but we live in a culture that doesn´t notice it."

"...the feminine is represented by space, which is of course black at night, but were it not for black and empty space, there would be no possibility whatsoever to see the stars."

Alan Watts lectures about the "negative feminine aspect of god and the universe" and all criticism I have for this one is him going a little bit too far with this to make an unnecessarily exagerated, humorous point of "god" being black and a woman merely to underline the inclusion of "negative feminine traits" within the portfolio of god. Which is not wrong as in these traits of being "void", "black", "spacey", "abyssmal" or "cold" are surely part of the whole package, yet this alone would not inspire me to assign a gender to its totality. Consciousness in contrast to spirit would be the carrier of these "passive/feminine" traits, yet observed in a wider perspective both do not oppose each other, but form one single, comprehensive entity, as do all their supposedly contrarian traits, which emerge from the same source - so, why would you even bother with addressing a gender to god?

Outwitting the Devil

"Don´t overdo it."

"If this man didn´t have a few little vices he would seize to manifest, he would simply disappear. He has to have these things to keep him grounded."

"If you´re gonna outwit the devil it is terribly important that you don´t give him any advance notice. And this is where the work of the sly man comes in."

"The art of the sly man is to make no contest, but simply to leave without one word."

"In this respect - you know - you are your worst enemy (...) already the devil knows, because who do you think the devil is?"

In short, you will need some soul glue to not vanish into a fog that gets lifted up and dispersed all over the scenery by the warm rays of the morning sun. Do some stupid things every once in a while to keep in touch with life and the silly rest of us. Be somewhat of an idiot, too, at least occasionally, so we can have something handy and familiar to relate to in your image.
You might think that people do not just disappear, because they are lacking in cultivating some little vices in their lives. Well, being a practitioner of Wu-wei, myself, I am not here to convince you of anything at all, just take it as a metaphor, then, for all I care, buddy. Nevertheless, Alan makes some very interesting remarks about the devil, does he not?! He calls him a fallen arch angel and goes on to (spoiler alert) identify him as your self, which makes him and his audience laugh!
The act itself and the decision to act have to be one and the same action, happening in unison and once and for all. The hunter becomes one with his prey. Not a hair or even a sudden lightning strike ought to fit in between both of them, as this alone can provide with the quality of being on point, perfectly, blending in with the whole universe from which to discern the practitioner, his action and his decision to act at this point has become impossible.

Maybe even better, than the Tao-te-king, does the bible serve our understanding of these special "feminine" traits of "god"/the universe.

A very important hint to this whole "vajayjay mystery" gives psalm 23, verse 4:

Psalm 23 King James Version (KJV)

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

The valley of the shadow of death

Compare this^ wording to the teachings and vocabulary of the Tao-te-king, respectively to the "Traditional-(East-)Asian-Philosophies" (such as Buddhism, Taoism, Zen, the Vedas) and you will find that it´s fair to say: these are one and the same observations on "the nature of god and death".

If I am understanding him correctly, I completely agree. It is about balance. The problem is the females have no interest in balance, and their greed and lack of direction has consumed our current generation. Females, just as men, have their place in life. Females have their strengths, their weaknesses, and they have completely different desires and goals.

Corporations and governments have played females, using their weaknesses, causing them to become nothing short of disgusting animals in modern society. They stain their skin with tattoos, cut themselves out of mental distress, indulge in temporary satisfactions to fill the void that poor decision making has led them to. It is no coincidence that most hoarders are females, most eaten by their house pets are females, most forgotten elderly who unwantingly die alone are female, and so on.

When you remove balance, extremes are more present, and it is found easier in the loud and attention starved females. It is only a matter of time before the pendulum swings the other way, but I hope that their suffering now is not forgotten. Those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

"As you honestly follow your own selfishness, many interesting transformations begin to come about in you.

One of the most interesting transformations of being directly and honestly selfish in the same way that for example cats are,

is that you stop deceiving people."

"Don't be scared, it's all a show."

This one sums me up. If there is nothing to worry about, eventually, some thought will fill the empty void and my stomach will start to push me about. I get this completely about the need to worry to feel like a responsible human being. What's with that? If I'm worried then I'm being a grown up. Perhaps more conditioning was performed on me when I was a lad? Any hoo like that, Watts, one.

Not such a bad voice. Reminds me of the old black and white movies when people used to say "tally hoe" and the like. The non threatening way they used to "give people a piece of their mind" spoken through a cigarette, wearing a suit and hat.

Some of the earlier James Bond movies had this charm to when Roger Moore was at the helm. I remember "A View to a Kill" when JB was most upset by his undercover butler, Patrick Macnee, being bumped off by the then baddy Christopher Walken.

"I´m worried, because I worry."

Compare this with the 1. paragraph of

The Enchiridion

By Epictetus

Written 135 A.C.E.

Translated by Elizabeth Carter

1. Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions. Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in one word, whatever are not our own actions.

The things in our control are by nature free, unrestrained, unhindered; but those not in our control are weak, slavish, restrained, belonging to others. Remember, then, that if you suppose that things which are slavish by nature are also free, and that what belongs to others is your own, then you will be hindered. You will lament, you will be disturbed, and you will find fault both with gods and men. But if you suppose that only to be your own which is your own, and what belongs to others such as it really is, then no one will ever compel you or restrain you. Further, you will find fault with no one or accuse no one. You will do nothing against your will. No one will hurt you, you will have no enemies, and you not be harmed.

Aiming therefore at such great things, remember that you must not allow yourself to be carried, even with a slight tendency, towards the attainment of lesser things. Instead, you must entirely quit some things and for the present postpone the rest. But if you would both have these great things, along with power and riches, then you will not gain even the latter, because you aim at the former too: but you will absolutely fail of the former, by which alone happiness and freedom are achieved.

Work, therefore to be able to say to every harsh appearance, "You are but an appearance, and not absolutely the thing you appear to be." And then examine it by those rules which you have, and first, and chiefly, by this: whether it concerns the things which are in our own control, or those which are not; and, if it concerns anything not in our control, be prepared to say that it is nothing to you.

You can read further right here: http://classics.mit.edu/Epictetus/epicench.html

"What would you think of as "void"?

Being lost in a fog. (...) Being in the darkness."

"Well, sensory deprivation, if you know how to handle it, can be quite interesting.

It will have the same sorts of results as... err taking LSD or something like that."

...it´s funny, until I started this thread, I didn´t knew of Alan Watts or his body of work, which probably had a lot to do with the rising popularity of Zen in the West during the past century. The similarities and accordances between Zen and Stoicism are apparent.
