Debating is a part of the process of not just receiving knowledge but knowing oneself.

In the pursuit of truth, a man must not just hold multiple perspectives at one time, but synthesize them as well.

This thread is dedicated to basic debating tactics and strategies for both online and in real life.  It is about what "I" use and "you" use.  This is just a thread for swapping tricks, stories, etc.

First because vanity is my favorite sin and I like to hear myself talk, but second because it provides a practical means to dealing with people as well as understanding oneself.

After all, in the beginning was "the word" and this sets the foundation for the logic/rhetoric dualism.

So to begin:

1.  All arguments are a projection of the observer.  If you want to understand the argument, understand the observer.  The observer is the origin of all arguments.  All arguments are emotionally fueled, even the most rational.  Very rarely will you meet a truly rational person, and if you do it will be a man.  If a woman, she will have severe emotional problems and mask her inability to be a mother through reason.

All arguments occur from a point of origin.

2.  All arguments can be cycled back and dissolved on themselves.  For example if someone says the sky is blue I can cycle it back to is the color blue cause for the sky?  Now this may seem absurd, but the loop either dissolves the statement or, if the other person is intelligent, opens it up for further exploration (ie "is color a cause?").

All arguments can be cycled and dissolved.

3.  Ask "why" three time in a row.  By time three, most people are going off of sheer faith.

All arguments exist through continuums.

Be careful when asking why.

You are correct that you need to ask why & sometimes  a blunt use of why often causes people to become defensive.

Try to find a gentler way of asking why; of course if you profile the other  person's personality that will help you to adjust your style to get the best result from them.

Don't see a debate as combative and trying to prove the other person wrong or stupid see it as a quest for truth and a better understanding for both "sides"

No one is completely devoid of emotion even the most rational and logical people.

Some are better at controlling emotions than others and it is something which people can improve on with practice.

A trick you can use, if you start feeling angry, is tense every muscle in your body including your face and count to 20 then untense.

Some people are naturally passionate people & it should not be assumed that that makes them less intelligent because it doesn't.

During debates some people will deliberately try to use techniques to provoke the other person's emotions or try to make them look stupid etc

I don't like people that do that I prefer a more honest style of debating where people simply state their opinions and reasons why.

When you think the other person has finished speaking count to 3 or 4 in your head before you speak.

Use what Miller Heiman used to call the golden silence-elicits more information.

No argument here, I know what's wrong, and it's not up for debate!

Debating the truth is an exorcise in futility!

Debating the truth is an exorcise in futility!

It can be particularly when peoples' entire argument is, "but the government said so", "but it's a government study"...
