ZOOM Host Function – Assigning or Claiming Role

The Zoom Video Communication Host Role ensures that a session is managed in the event of technical issues, unauthorized access by non-vetted members, and provides on-time highest level control for participant issues.

The Zoom Support URL for further information is: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362603-Host-Controls-in-a-Meeting

The below instructions are for Windows Platform users. Macintosh, Linux or smart device instructions may be found on the Zoom.us support page. Just add the page title in the search window and the applicable information will be displayed.

The current Host of an active Zoom Video session may transfer the Host role to another participant in the event that they are leaving the session.

Host controls can be passed within a meeting from one participant to another.

  • In the host controls, click Manage.
  • This will open the participants list.
  • Hover over the name of the participant you want to make the host and click More.
  • Click Make Host.
  • Click Yes to confirm that you want to make this user the host.

Hosts should always confirm via chat or speech that session attendees are willing and prepared to serve as a host prior to transferring host permissions.

All Zoom sessions are scheduled to allow participants to join the meeting prior to the Host signing in and starting the meeting. Not enabling “Join Before Host” results in the participants seeing a pop up dialog that says “The meeting is waiting for the host to join.” No communication between participants is possible under these conditions.

While waiting for the host to join, any participant may claim the Host role by clicking on Participants
